My journey through these numerous locations have showed me just how complex childhood in 19th-century France actually was. From being constructed by school, then reshaped by industrialization, protected unevenly by institutions, and later reclaimed by reformers. It was not a single experience but instead a battleground of multiple ideas, where the state, families, and workers struggled to define what it meant to be a child.
